Edmonton, November 4, 2009 – An emotional reunion was held at the Edmonton Humane Society on November 4th as a three month old puppy paid a special visit to EHS medical staff who recently nursed the puppy from critical condition.
The male Havanese-mix pup was first brought to the EHS by a Good Samaritan who wishes to remain anonymous. The man and his daughter found the puppy lying on the side of the road in north Edmonton on September 23rd. It is believed the wandering puppy had been recently struck by a passing car and left there. The Good Samaritan drove the pup to the EHS shelter, hoping that someone there could help. EHS medical staff immediately worked to save the male pup whose future was grim.

EHS medical staff perform x-rays on Humphry on September 23 in the EHS hospital
Initial X-rays showed a small fracture in the puppy’s hip and indicated that his injuries might be far more severe. Exploratory surgery showed that he was suffering from internal injuries to his urinary tract. Staff knew the injuries were life threatening and didn’t think he was going to make it. He became known as “Broken Puppy Humphry” and remained in critical condition, fighting for his life in the EHS hospital for three weeks.
It was touch and go. As with most critical injuries, more complications developed over time. It took two surgeries and the medical skills of four different vets while in the care of the EHS to mend this little guy back to health!
Humphry about to leave the EHS hospital to be placed up for adoption on October 17 - healed and ready to go!
Humphry was placed up for adoption on October 17 and after just a few hours of being available, went home with Salem Bryant of Edmonton. It was love at first sight for Salem. She just knew Humphry was the puppy for her, especially after hearing about the horrible ordeal he survived. Salem knew she was able to give him the extra TLC he deserved.

Salem with Humphry during their reunion at the EHS on November 4th
Salem and Humphry spent time at the EHS shelter on November 4th to thank the dedicated medical staff who saved the puppy’s life. Humphry is just one of several animals that make it through the doors at The Edmonton Humane Society every year with serious medical conditions. The EHS is only able to afford caring for them thanks to generous financial gifts from the public. Anyone wishing to donate can call 780-491-3507 or (click here).
