MEDIA STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE EDMONTON HUMANE SOCIETY RESPONSE TO RECENT CAT SEIZURE EDMONTON, AB (October 22, 2019) – We were saddened to learn about the recent animal cruelty case which resulted in 39 cats being euthanized at Animal Care & Control Centre (ACCC). Of the remaining cats, we can confirm that four were transferred into EHS’ care on October 4 and 5. Unfortunately, we had to make the difficult decision to euthanize one of the cats for medical reasons as its condition was not improving. The remaining three cats are well enough for re-homing. We cannot comment on their conditions however and will not be revealing their identities due to the ongoing investigation and for the safety of the cats. We want to express our thanks to our partners at Animal Care & Control Centre (ACCC) and Edmonton Police Service (EPS) for their work on this case. We are grateful that the cats have been removed from this situation so that they can be relieved of their suffering, and that we could be a part of the journey to finding three of them a home where they will be well-loved and cared for. NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE EDMONTON HUMANE SOCIETY UNVEILS MOBILE SPAY AND NEUTER UNIT New mobile program will expand the reach of the Prevent Another Litter Subsidy (PALS) program through removing transport barrier EDMONTON, AB (September 24, 2019) – The Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) is taking its spay and neuter services on the road, introducing a new mobile surgical unit to the community at the Bissell Centre today. The new vehicle will help the Society to make its Prevent Another Litter Subsidy (PALS) spay and neuter program more accessible. “We are very proud to see the dream of having a mobile spay and neuter vehicle realized, and excited for the possibilities it brings for our Prevent Another Litter Subsidy program,” said Liza Sunley, CEO of the Edmonton Humane Society. “This project has been in progress for three years now and was made possible thanks to our generous donors, including the Gordon & Diane Buchanan Family Foundation.” Spay and neuter surgeries will be taking place in the mobile unit today at the Bissell Centre as part of a pilot project for the mobile program, so EHS can plan for a full launch in 2020. NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DOGS AND PUPPIES FROM RECENT ANIMAL PROTECTION CASE PLACED IN QUARANTINE AS A PRECAUTION EDMONTON, AB (August 16, 2019) – The Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) has placed the Havanese dogs and puppies who were involved in a recent animal protection case in quarantine. The decision comes after EHS was notified on Wednesday that one of the dogs from the case, who had been transferred to another organization, has been showing symptoms of canine distemper. “We have the dogs in quarantine out of an abundance of caution” said Catherine Stevenson, Director of Operations at the Edmonton Humane Society. “At this time we have no reason to believe the dogs in our care are ill, and this precautionary step will allow our medical team to closely monitor the dogs for any symptoms and prevent the potential spread of disease.” The first group of dogs were transferred to EHS last Friday from the City of Edmonton’s Animal Care & Control Centre (ACCC). EHS has taken in 30 dogs and puppies from the case so far. EDMONTON, AB (August 9, 2019) – The Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) has started accepting dogs and puppies who were a part of the large seizure conducted by the City of Edmonton’s Animal Care & Control Centre (ACCC) last week. The transfer is the next step for the dogs on their way to eventually be re-homed. “We are thankful to our partners at Animal Care & Control Centre for bringing these dogs to safety and are glad that we can be a part of their journey to their new lives” said Catherine Stevenson, Director of Operations at the Edmonton Humane Society. “The dogs will first undergo exams by our medical team and we will determine the next steps from there. Adopting a shelter or rescue pet can have its challenges, especially when their history is unknown. However, the rewards can be more than we ever imagined. Recently we received this incredible update from the family of EHS pet Dakota, who was adopted from us six years ago... "For anyone on the fence about adopting listen up... now I really liked the idea of adopting a dog, but was not really up for it. The wife and kids really wanted a dog and kinda suckered me into going down to the Edmonton Humane Society to take a look around. There she was - a one-year-old Anatolian Shepard named Dakota. She was big but real quiet. The kids loved her and she cuddled up to me and well... yup she’s in the van on the way home. Now the first while was a challenge. She wasn’t completely house broken and loved to chew. Like all my hats, a cell phone, an e-reader, etc. I had just about had it till... One night the dog came up the stairs and into our room, now that was completely out of her character. NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SAINT BERNARD TRIO RETURNING TO EDMONTON FOR PETS IN THE PARK EDMONTON, AB (May 22, 2019) – Gunther, Goliath and Gasket will be returning to Edmonton on Saturday, June 22 to be the honourary Walk Marshals at the Edmonton Humane Society’s (EHS) annual Pets in the Park festival. The three Saint Bernard brothers were adopted from EHS by a family in Calgary last October. The dogs, who have gained the nickname “the 3Gs”, garnered worldwide attention last fall when EHS put the call out for a special adopter who could take in all three of them. They required one home as they were bonded to each other, and experienced stress and anxiety when separated. Their story brought much-needed attention to shelter animals around the globe, reaching nearly 125 million people in 45 countries, and even being featured by NBC’s Today Show. “We are beyond excited to have Gasket, Gunther, Goliath and their family leading our walk at Pets in the Park this year,” said Liza Sunley, Chief Executive Officer of EHS. “Although their situation was unique, their story symbolizes that of so many homeless pets around the world. A Note from EHS' New CEO, Liza Like many of you, I have been a lifelong animal lover—right from my very first pet, Fifi the hamster, that I got in grade six. I couldn’t contain my excitement having her join my family after years of asking my parents for a pet. I’ve experienced that same excited feeling throughout my first week as CEO of the Edmonton Humane Society (EHS). This opportunity is a dream come true for me, and I am thrilled to be a part of such an incredible organization with endless potential to positively impact the people and pets in our community. I have been lucky enough to experience the impact of EHS myself, having adopted my first cat from EHS, and creating many memories with my rescue dogs while spending time in the Central Bark Dog Park. I have long admired and have a deep appreciation for the work that EHS has been doing in our community for over 110 years, and am humbled to have been entrusted with helping to shape the future of the Society. As I’ve been getting to know our team over the past week, I have seen a group of extremely passionate people who are dedicated to advancing animal welfare.
