Join an Edmonton Humane Society trainer and other dog-and-handler teams for a structured group walk in different locations throughout the city.

These drop-in training walks provide an opportunity to practice everyday skills in a real-world environment while helping your dog learn to remain calm and neutral around other dogs, people and common neighbourhood distractions.

Who Should Attend?

These walks may benefit:

  • Dogs who need more practice walking politely on leash.
  • Dogs who become distracted or excited around other dogs.
  • Dogs working on calmness and neutrality.
  • Shy or uncertain dogs who benefit from controlled exposure.
  • Adolescent dogs developing their real-world skills.
  • Owners looking for guided training practice outside of a classroom.
  • Graduates of EHS training classes who want to continue building their skills.

Dogs must be able to be safely managed by their handler in a group and public environment. If your dog has a history of aggression or significant reactivity, please contact our team before registering so we can help determine whether a pack walk is an appropriate option.

What to Expect

During each walk, we may work on:

  • Loose-leash walking.
  • Checking in with the handler.
  • Calmly passing other dogs and people.
  • Engage and disengage exercises.
  • Focus around distractions.
  • Appropriate distance and handler advocacy.
  • Basic obedience skills.
  • Confidence in new environments.
  • Calm group movement.
  • Reducing frustration or overexcitement on walks.

What to Bring

To start each group walk on the right paw, make sure you bring the following:

  • A secure, properly fitted collar or harness.
  • A standard six-foot leash — for everyone’s safety, no retractable leashes.
  • Plenty of small, high-value treats.
  • Waste bags.
  • Water for you and your dog.
  • Weather-appropriate clothing.

Walk locations will vary. As these sessions take place outdoors, participants should be prepared for changing weather and walking conditions.
