According to City of Edmonton Animal Control Bylaws, it is illegal to keep a stray animal. Strays must be turned into the City of Edmonton's Animal Animal Care and Control Centre, to give owners every opportunity to claim their animals.
When you turn an animal in to the City of Edmonton's Animal Care and Control Centre you may ask for a "special consideration." This means you will be given the first opportunity to bring the animal into your family if the animal:
- is not claimed by the owner
- is deemed adoptable by a veterinarian at the City’s Animal Services Department Facility.
Unclaimed adoptable animals are transferred to the Edmonton Humane Society.
