BITE HISTORY
VOCAL-NO APARTMENT/CONDO
EXPERIENCED OWNER RECOMMENDED
PREY DRIVE

History:
- Previous owner reported touch sensitivity around the collar area
- Bite incident when grabbed by walking gear
- Mouths leash when excited
- High energy and playful
- Demand barks when he wants to interact with something
- Bites hands when pointed at when scolded or nose is tapped
- Poor recall when distracted

Behaviours observed in shelter:
- Initially came to shelter as puppy and was fearful, over time has gained confidence and become more excitable and impulsive
- Defensive and fearful towards strangers (barking, growling, backing away with low posture)
- Vocal-barks when frustrated, to seek interaction with people/dogs
- Excitable and social with familiar people (mouths, jumps, barks)
- Potential for separation anxiety (vocal when familiar people leave)
- Social and playful with dogs and will bark at them to initiate play
- Barrier reactive
- Mouthy
- Once resource guarded high value food from person

Recommendations:
- Familiarity with fearful and impulsive dogs to ensure capability of supporting his needs as he matures and potentially undergoes secondary fear period
- Willingness to undergo ongoing training and management throughout life to ensure dog's success in home
- Continued socialization to help dog generalize and reduce fear in tandem with positive reinforcement training; reward dog for confident behaviours when introduced to strangers and other novel stimuli
- Instruct new people to appropriately greet and handle dog and supervise all interactions to ensure he remains comfortable
- "The Cautious Canine" by Patricia McConnell for further information on living with a fearful dog and EHS classes "Creating Courageous Canines" to build confidence if needed
- Monitor interactions with other dogs to ensure he learns appropriate play and builds confidence with other dogs
- Interrupt and redirect/counter-condition unwanted behaviours such as barrier reactivity and prey drive
- Ample exercise as well as mental stimulation such as clicker training and puzzle feeders to provide challenges and help dog cope with boredom, EHS classes "Brain Busters" should dog require more mental exercise
- EHS class Managing Mischief should excitability occur in home, redirect mouthing to toy or other appropriate outlet
- EHS class Hustle Your Walk to teach loose leash walking and recall
- Avoid aversive handling such as collar grabbing, nose tapping, etc, and instead utilize positive reinforcement and management to teach appropriate behaviours and prevent undesirable behaviour
