Tips for Improving Your Puppy’s Behaviour

Exposing your puppy to new people, animals, objects and environments in a positive way and using rewards like treats, praise, and play while they’re young (3 weeks to 3 or 4 months of age) is critical to preventing future behaviour issues. Read our Guide to Puppy Socialization to learn more.

EHS offers Puppy Pop-in classes for puppies between 2 and 6 months and Juvenile Puppy Pop-in for those between 6 months to 1 year. You can bring them to as many as you’d like to help socialize them in a safe, controlled environment under the supervision of a professional trainer.

‘Mouthing’ is a common behaviour in puppies as they explore the world with their teeth, chew, and learn how to get attention.

Puppies need to be taught what is okay to chew and how to get attention while young, so it does not become biting as they get older and stronger.

For more information, read our guide on puppy mouthing.

Successful housetraining can take some time, but with consistency and routine your puppy or dog will learn to eliminate outdoors.

You can also use pee pads or grass pads indoors, which are especially useful if you’re out of the house or living in an apartment.

Take Training Classes

Teaching your puppy basic skills in a class can help develop your bond with your new puppy and help them become a model canine citizen.

EHS offers Puppy Basics for puppies aged 3 to 6 months, and Basic Obedience for those over 6 months.

For puppies with lots of energy, Managing Mischief can help them learn impulse control, and Brain Busters will give you fun and creative ways to tire them out.

Speak to a Dog Trainer

EHS has a free pet behaviour hotline where you can get the advice of an expert trainer by calling 780-491-3521 or emailing us.

You can also book a private behaviour consultation to put together a customized plan with our trainers.

For advice on finding a trainer, see our guide on choosing the right pet training.
