Supporting People and Pets Affected by Wildfire Evacuations

Last Updated: May 15, 2024 @ 3:00 p.m.

The Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) is working with our community partners to assist people and pets who have been evacuated to Edmonton due to the wildfires.

Please check back here for regular updates about EHS’ role in supporting the wildfire response and companion animals who have been displaced.

If you have not been evacuated but are under alert, visit our Emergency Preparedness with Pets resource for tips on evacuating with pets and see the Government of Alberta’s Pet Preparedness resources to download a checklist.

For those affected by smoke and poor air quality, see our Pets and Air Quality resource here.

How to Help

Pets Supplies

We are accepting donations of supplies for pets and pet guardians who have been evacuated to Edmonton.

The most-needed items currently are:

  • Plastic pet crates/carriers (all sizes)
  • XL wire crates
  • Dog and cat collars, harnesses and leashes
  • Large blankets and towels
  • Large dog toys
  • Cat litter and litter boxes
  • Dry dog and cat food
  • Timothy hay and food for small animals

New items and unopened food are preferred.

Monetary Donations

If you are unable to donate supplies but would like to help, monetary donations are also being accepted, click here. You can also call our team at 780-491-3507.

Donations will be used for wildfire relief for people and pets who have been affected, with excess supporting urgent needs of animals in our community throughout the year.

Thank you for your generosity and kindness to support people and pets affected by these wildfires.

Foster and Volunteering

At this time, EHS is not in need of fosters or volunteers to support wildfire response efforts, however we may call on fosters to help with temporary housing for evacuated pets, or volunteers to support evacuated pets in shelter, in the future. To learn about our foster program, click here, and see here for current volunteer opportunities. To add your name to a volunteer waitlist should evacuee support be required, please email volunteer@edmontonhumanesociety.com.
