EHS Achieves Humane Canada Accreditation

EHS Achieves Humane Canada Accreditation

Why This Matters for Animals and the People Who Care for Them

I’m excited to share an important milestone for the Edmonton Humane Society (EHS), and one that speaks to how deeply we care about the animals and people we serve.

EHS has received national accreditation from Humane Canada, confirming that we meet rigorous, third-party standards for animal welfare, care and governance. This recognition makes us the first shelter in Western Canada and one of only three in the country to achieve Humane Canada accreditation.

While we’re proud of this achievement, what matters most is why we pursued it and what it represents for animal welfare in our community.

What is Humane Canada Accreditation?

Humane Canada’s Accreditation Program is designed specifically for humane societies and SPCAs. It evaluates organizations against evidence-based standards rooted in the internationally recognized Five Freedoms of animal welfare, along with eight quality descriptors: accountable, best practice, community oriented, effective, humane, leadership, progressive and transparent. Accreditation demonstrates that these principles are built into an organization’s design and operations.

The process is thorough. It includes a detailed self-assessment, peer review by experts in the sector and an on-site visit that examines everything from policies and programs to facilities and day-to-day practices. Accreditation is granted for five years, with a formal progress report required along the way.

In short, it provides independent verification that EHS operates ethically, transparently and with a strong commitment to continuous improvement. Learn more about Humane Canada Accreditation.

Why Standards Matter, Especially in Alberta

In Alberta, there are currently no legislated standards specific to animal care organizations. That reality is part of what motivated us to pursue this accreditation.

Clear, evidence-based standards help ensure confidence in the care and treatment of shelter animals. They create shared expectations, accountability and consistency, not just within an organization, but across the sector.

By choosing to participate in this program, EHS is demonstrating what strong, responsible animal welfare can look like, even when it isn’t required.

“As the first shelter in Western Canada to achieve this distinction, EHS is helping lead the way in strengthening animal welfare practices across the region.”

What this Reflects About Our Work

This accreditation reflects the work our staff and volunteers do every day to provide safe, compassionate, high-quality care for animals and the people connected to them. It also reflects the trust our community places in us, from adopters and donors to partners and advocates.

For those who support EHS, this recognition offers reassurance that your trust is well-placed and that our work is guided by clear standards and independent review.

Looking Ahead

Accreditation is not an endpoint. It’s a commitment to keep learning, improving and raising the bar.

EHS will continue strengthening our programs, deepening transparency and working alongside others committed to advancing animal welfare across Canada. We’re proud of this milestone and energized by what comes next as we continue working toward a future where people and pets can truly thrive, together.

Thank you to our staff, volunteers, supporters and community for your trust and belief in this work. Your support makes it possible for us to keep improving, delivering meaningful results and caring for animals when they need us most.
