Surrender appointments are limited and each request will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis as we work through our surrender waitlist. Appointment availability will vary depending on the animal and its needs, as well as the space and resources we currently have available at our shelter.
Before You Surrender
We understand that surrendering a pet can be a difficult and emotional decision to make, and appreciate that you are doing what is best for your pet and your family.
Surrendering a pet to a shelter should be a last resort after exploring all other options. Before you proceed with requesting a surrender appointment, we recommend looking into the following resources depending on your situation.

Our Pet Pantry program helps pet owners facing financial barriers access food and supplies for their companion animals.
Check our Resources for Pet Guardians where you can find a list of pet food banks in Alberta and resources for financial support for veterinary care.
We also suggest trying to re-home your pet privately with the help of family and friends. A shelter environment is unfamiliar for most pets which can be stressful, so it is often best for your pet if they can go straight into another home without having to come to a shelter.

All surrenders at the Edmonton Humane Society are done by appointment only in order to prepare for your pet’s arrival and to ensure we have the space and resources available to provide the best possible care.
Please note, all appointments require proof of ownership, or proof of authority to surrender on behalf of the owner.
