A Professional Certificate for Understanding Canine Behaviour

Our Dog Behaviour and Training Methodology (DBTM) certificate program is a comprehensive, six-week course designed for individuals looking to build a strong foundation in canine behaviour and training. Ideal for those aspiring to start their own dog training business, this program combines classroom learning with hands-on experience to ensure you gain practical, real-world skills.

Please note that you must be 18 years of age or older, have a current tetanus shot, and be in good physical health for this program.

This Program Is Designed for People Only

Do not bring your personal dog to class, as all training will be conducted with dogs currently in our care.

Course Structure

Classes are held twice a week, every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., for a total of six weeks. Please note that holidays may impact scheduling. Your instructor will provide any necessary updates if your class will be affected by a holiday.

Throughout the program, participants will engage in both theoretical and practical instruction, including:

  • Dog body language and behaviour
  • Puppy development and learning theory
  • Training tools and techniques
  • Behaviour modification and reactivity
  • Aggression and impulse control
  • Curriculum development
  • Client communication and private consultations

You’ll also complete three assignments and two quizzes to reinforce key concepts and track your progress.

Gain Hands-On Experience

A key component of our DBTM program is direct interaction with shelter dogs at the Edmonton Humane Society. You’ll have the opportunity to apply what you’ve learned by working with dogs in our care — developing training plans, shaping new behaviours, and addressing common behavioural challenges.

Shadowing Component

Upon successful completion of the classroom portion, students will begin the shadowing phase, which includes:

A total of 30 shadowing hours must be completed within one year of your course start date.

Final Examination

To earn your Dog Behaviour and Training Methodology certificate, you will complete a final examination consisting of:

  • A written component
  • An oral interview
  • A practical skills assessment
