Improving Spaces for Animals and the Experience for Everyone Who Visits
We’re renovating our public adoption gallery in 2026 to enhance spaces for animals and improve the experience for everyone who comes through our doors.
Construction begins April 27, 2026 and is expected to be complete this fall.
We remain fully open throughout construction. Animals will continue to receive care and find loving homes, though some spaces and processes will look a little different while work is underway.
This project is an important investment in animal well-being, comfort and the future of animal welfare in our community.
When our facility opened in 2009, it was designed to be one of the most state-of-the-art animal shelters in Canada.
Since then, our adoption gallery has helped nearly 25,000 dogs — and even more cats — find loving homes.
After more than 15 years of daily use and cleaning, these spaces are due for renewal. This renovation will not only address wear and tear, but also create even better spaces for animals to rest, recover and thrive—aligned with modern sheltering standards and best practices in animal care.
Most importantly, it will help ensure animals in our care have comfortable, safe spaces while they wait to meet their new families.
What’s Changing
The project will include several key improvements to the adoption gallery:
Upgraded dog life rooms that provide more comfort, privacy and choice for dogs in our care.
Improved public areas that create a more welcoming experience for people meeting animals.
Refreshed cat chalets designed to better support feline well-being, including access to fresh air in outdoor catios during warmer months.
A dedicated kitten gallery designed to showcase and support young cats in a calm, purpose-built space.
In short: new spaces, improved comfort, and an even better experience for animals and people alike.
Before Renovation
For more than 15 years, our adoption gallery has helped thousands of animals find loving homes. Over time, daily use and cleaning have taken their toll.
During Renovation
We’ll continue caring for animals and helping them find homes. Some areas and processes will temporarily change to support safety and well-being, but our work will continue.
After Renovation
Animals will benefit from updated spaces designed for even more comfort and well-being, and visitors will enjoy an improved experience meeting them.
We’re Still Here for Animals (and You!)
Even during construction, we remain open.
Animals will continue to:
Receive daily care.
Meet potential adopters.
Find loving homes.
Visitors may notice:
Adjusted pathways through the shelter.
Different areas for meeting animals.
Some spaces temporarily unavailable.
These temporary changes are to ensure the safety and well-being of both animals and people. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we make these improvements.
Help Us Build Even Better Spaces for Animals
This renovation is a $2.4 million investment in animal well-being, comfort and the future of animal welfare in our community.
Thanks to our generous supporters, much of the project has already been funded — but we still need $545,000 to complete the work.
Your support will help create even better spaces for animals for years to come.
Ways You Can Help
Adopt
Adopting a pet gives an animal a loving home and makes space for the next animal who needs care.
Foster
Temporary foster homes are especially important during construction to help us maintain capacity and support animals not yet ready for adoption.
Donate
Help us close the final funding gap and create even better spaces for shelter animals.
No. We remain fully open and operational. Animals will continue to receive care and be adopted, though some processes and spaces will look different during construction.
No. We always practice managed intake, which means animals are admitted by appointment based on our capacity to care for them. This considers all their needs — including space, staff and volunteer time, medical and behaviour care, and enrichment and exercise.
Capacity naturally changes throughout the year depending on available resources.
During the renovation, we aim to maintain our capacity through utilizing temporary spaces and our foster network. If you are interested in fostering – whether for a few days or weeks – join our foster program.
If you are considering rehoming your pet, please visit our HELP tool for options or to contact our admitting team.

After more than 15 years of daily use and tens of thousands of animals, the adoption gallery spaces require renewal to address wear and tear and create even better spaces for animals to rest, recover and thrive—aligned with modern sheltering standards and best practices in animal care.
While the dedicated kitten gallery will be new, this project primarily focuses on improving existing animal spaces and enhancing the visitor experience.
Yes. Animals will be available for adoption, though you may meet them in different areas. Staff and volunteers will help guide you.
The spaces where animals stay are an important part of their well-being. Thoughtful design supports better health, reduces stress and can help animals find homes more quickly.
These improvements are an investment in the quality of care we provide every day.
The project is funded through generous donations from our community. While much of the $2.4 million cost is covered, we working to raise the final $545,000 to complete the work.
