Celebrating Be Kind to Animals Week

Be Kind to Animals Week You don’t need a special day or week to celebrate the human-animal bond by being kind to animals big and small in your community. This year's Be Kind to Animals Week is celebrated from May 7 - 13, 2023 and we are sharing five simple ways you can make a paws-itive impact on the lives of companion animals. 1. Get Your Pet from a Reputable Source Check your local animal shelter first if you or someone you know is thinking about expanding the family to accept a new pet. There are always homeless animals in shelters in need of a loving home, and pets adopted from reputable shelters, such as EHS, will have essential health checks, up-to-date vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered to prevent unwanted litters. Shelters like EHS also help ensure that the people and the pets are a good match for one another. If your are unable to find a suitable pet for your family at a shelter, do your research to find a responsible breeder. A responsible breeder will: provide information on the animal’s pedigree, let you see where the animals are being raised and let you meet at least one of the parents, and have health certificates and records of veterinary visits. Humane Canada offers a complete checklist of the essential [...]

Meet Our Founder: Rosetta Graydon

Horses, tea parties and one woman’s determination: that’s how the Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) began in 1907. Rosetta Graydon moved from Winnipeg to Edmonton in early 1894, when her husband George was asked to take over a drug store on Jasper Avenue, across from the Alberta Hotel*. Each day, Rosetta watched travellers tie up their horses in the frigid winter temperatures, without food, water or shelter, while horse owners spent the night in a warm hotel bar. After witnessing this inhumane treatment, Rosetta decided something had to be done. She walked down the street to a local stable and asked if hotel patrons could bring their horses to board overnight for a smaller fee to cover the costs of feeding, watering and sheltering these horses. The stable hand agreed and from that point on, the horses were taken care of. But Rosetta’s animal welfare work didn’t stop with horses. Concerned for the welfare of companion animals, Rosetta started the Alberta Humane Society in April 1907, which later received its charter in July 1912. This small, dedicated group of volunteers ran the organization out of their homes, hosting tea parties where potential adopters could meet animals and adopt them. The organization has evolved greatly since then, and today is known as the Edmonton Humane Society. But we wouldn’t be where we are today without [...]

Kittens Found in Backpack Highlights the Importance of Spaying and Neutering Pets

NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE KITTENS FOUND IN BACKPACK HIGHLIGHTS THE IMPORTANCE OF SPAYING AND NEUTERING PETS EDMONTON, AB (February 8, 2023) – After two kittens were found abandoned in a child’s backpack last week in the St. Albert area, the Alberta SPCA and the Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) are reminding pet guardians about the importance of spaying and neutering their pets to prevent unwanted litters. The six-month-old kittens were found together, enclosed in a pink backpack in a ditch. The Alberta SPCA has opened an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the young cats being left in this manner. “While it can be difficult to find homes for unwanted pets, it’s never acceptable to abandon an animal, especially in such a callous way,” says Alberta SPCA Provincial Supervisor, Peace Officer Stuart Dodds. “When Albertans take on the responsibility of owning or caring for a pet, they also accept the responsibility of finding their next home if they can no longer care for it.” The kittens – a grey and white female named Pixie and a ginger tabby male named Christofur - were brought into the care of EHS. Aside from having ear mites, they were found to be otherwise healthy. They have undergone a mandatory stray hold and been spayed and neutered and will be available for adoption on EHS’ website [...]

Due to their neglected and malnourished condition, it will take a few weeks before they become available for adoption, as they recover and reach a healthy weight prior to their spay/neuter surgery. The dogs will be placed into foster care in the meantime. We are grateful that, with the support of our community, we can be here to provide a safe haven for animals who come from situations of neglect. We also wish to thank Strathcona County and the RCMP for their work on this case, and to the citizen who reported the concern, so the dogs could be removed from these unacceptable conditions. We cannot release any further details on the dogs at this time, as they are part of an active case. Questions regarding the case can be directed to the Strathcona County RCMP. When the dogs are ready for adoption, they will be on EHS’ website at edmontonhumanesociety.com/adoptables.
